49pc of US truckers won't have 'spy-in-the-cab' installed by deadline

NEARLY half of US truckers - 49 per cent - were not prepared to meet next week's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) deadline requiring trucks to use "spy-in-the-cab" electronic logging devices (ELD) to record driver work time, according to an online poll by Prepass HELP Inc.
Cost concerns, disbelief that FMCSA will enforce the mandate are cited in results of the poll, reports the American Journal of Transportation.
The poll, taken from November 30 - December 5, notes that 49 per cent, of the 1,620 respondents had not yet selected an ELD.
Only 33 per cent said they have selected and installed an ELD while 18 per cent said they have made a selection but have yet to install.
Of those who have not installed, 68 per cent say they will not meet the deadline, with 26 per cent saying the rule will not be enforced and 31 per cent refusiing to install the device altogether.
"It is surprising to see that such a large share of both owner-operators and drivers as well as fleet professionals see no need or rush to comply with the upcoming ELD mandate," said pollster Karen Rasmussen.
"Whether they are in favour of ELD or not, there is every indication that the FMCSA intends to follow through with its plans to require the devices without delay," she said. | | | | | | | |
