THE Port of Los Angeles posted a 22 per cent year-on-year increase in September container throughput to 763,785 TEU with empties rising 15.4 per cent.
The port said empties drove up overall gain last month due to China trade policy changes impacting waste paper exports from the US.
Meanwhile, laden imports decreased .07 per cent to 388,670 TEU year on year, and laden exports fell 3.17 per cent to 51,116 TEU.
Next door at the Port of Long Beach, cargo was up 28.3 per cent in September to 701,619 TEU, moving more boxes last month than any September in its history.
It was also the port's best quarter ever, handling 2,114,306 TEU in July, August and September, a quarterly rise of 15.9 per cent year on year.
Meanwhile, Shanghai posted a 7.7 per cent September increase to 3.37 million TEU, though throughput fell 2.6 per cent to 3.13 million TEU compared to August.
For LA, it was third biggest September on record. "As we enter the final quarter of 2017, we're pleased to be tracking toward record volumes,?said LA port executive director Gene Seroka. "We continue to demonstrate the LA advantage to cargo owners." | | | | | | | |
